Recent reports indicate that Grand Theft Auto VI could feature a 60 fps performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. This information comes from Borys Nieśpielak, a journalist on the Polish gaming podcast Rock and Borys, who claims to have a credible source within Rockstar.
Nieśpielak suggests that Rockstar is developing two separate visual presets for GTA 6: one targeting 30 fps with higher visual fidelity, and another aiming for 60 fps with reduced graphical settings to prioritize smoother gameplay. However, he notes that Rockstar has not finalized these features, and there is a possibility that the 60 fps mode will not be ready by the game's launch on November 19, 2026.
If the optimization work is not completed in time, a post-launch patch may be considered as a backup plan. Nieśpielak's source indicated that Rockstar has been cautious about announcing graphics modes due to uncertainty over the 60 fps mode's stability at launch.
Additionally, a Polish MediaMarkt pre-order listing for GTA 6 mentioned 'two graphics modes to choose from (Performance and Quality)' on next-generation consoles. However, this listing did not specify frame rates or resolution targets, raising questions about its authenticity.
While the idea of a two-mode setup aligns with trends in current-generation console games, technical analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of achieving 60 fps on existing hardware. Digital Foundry analyzed the official GTA 6 Trailers and concluded that a 60 fps performance mode is unlikely, even on upgraded consoles like the PS5 Pro. The trailers currently render at 30 fps at approximately 1440p, upscaled to 4K, and utilize ray-traced global illumination, which is integral to the game's visual identity.
Concerns have also been raised about the CPU performance, as Rockstar's open-world games require complex simulations that place significant demands on processing power. This could present a more substantial challenge than GPU limitations.
