Rockstar Games has outlined its policy for modding ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's release, which may disappoint some would-be entrepreneurs. According to IGN, the developer has a somewhat contentious history with the modding community but has lightened up in recent years, particularly following the success of GTA 5's RP community.
The new modding rules are clearly outlined on Rockstar's website. They prohibit the use of others' intellectual property, pornography, bullying, and endorsements of violent extremism. Modders are also restricted from making Rockstar's games available on platforms where they have not been officially released and cannot add characters, maps, or assets from other games.
One significant aspect of the policy addresses unauthorized commercialization of mods. Influencers like Adin Ross had plans to create a GTA 6 server where players could earn real money, but Rockstar's policy explicitly forbids this unless authorized by the company. Players cannot exchange real money in mods, whether through cryptocurrency or traditional currencies, nor can they use real money for gambling within modded content.
The policy indicates that the servers envisioned by influencers will not be feasible, as GTA 6 will not function as a Second Life experience for real money-making. Rockstar intends to maintain close supervision over the game to prevent potential corruption from radical commercialization.
While modding for GTA 6 is not expected to begin immediately, as the game is not releasing on PC until November 19, there have been hints from Take-Two Interactive that a PC version will eventually be available. However, the timeline for this remains unclear, though it is unlikely to be longer than a year given the rising popularity of PC gaming.
What This Means
Rockstar's new modding policy aims to establish clear boundaries for mod creators and influencers, ensuring that the integrity of GTA 6 is maintained. By prohibiting unauthorized commercialization, Rockstar seeks to prevent the potential for exploitation and maintain a controlled environment for modding.
