In a recent interview with the Paris-based fashion magazine Love, Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, discussed the studio's approach to maintaining relevance in Grand Theft Auto VI. According to Humphries, Rockstar aims to create a game that feels specific to the moment of its release without directly reflecting the real-world political landscape.
Humphries noted that while the franchise has a history of satirizing American life, the developers do not intend to replicate current events or political figures. He stated, “If you go back to previous GTAs, there’s never really been much focus on national politics.” He referenced GTA IV's focus on post-9/11 New York, explaining that it was a unique context rather than a template for future games.
He emphasized the importance of creating a world that feels alive and relevant, saying, “Making a game in Florida though, there is so much to work with.” The game will feature various cultural elements and characters that reflect the setting, with storytelling conveyed through environmental details like campaign signs, robocalls, and radio commercials.
Humphries also mentioned the need to create content that feels vital at the time of release, advising against simply jumping on trends. He remarked, “If there’s a trend blowing up for six months, you need to see it for what it is and not jump on the bandwagon.”
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
