Confirmed Facts

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the map in Grand Theft Auto VI, known as Leonida Keys, is roughly twice the size of Los Santos and Blaine County combined from Grand Theft Auto V. This makes it the largest game world Rockstar has ever created.

Despite its size, players will not explore every corner of the map by finishing the main story alone. Rockstar developer Aaron Garbut stated that while the story will guide players through major regions, the team intentionally avoided forcing every location into the main campaign.

Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries explained that the game's story aims to bring players around the map in an authentic and interesting manner, allowing for exploration of various places, cultures, and vibes.

Community Reports

According to community reports, Rockstar has emphasized the importance of creating a cohesive world in Leonida, rather than a collection of isolated locations. Vice City is inspired by Miami, while Ambrosia draws from the Everglades.

However, some of Florida's most famous destinations, including Disney World, Universal Studios, and the Space Coast, may not appear in the game. Rockstar aims to capture the broader atmosphere of South Florida through richer ecosystems and distinctive locations.

The development team conducted extensive field research across Florida, visiting various nightlife spots and neighborhoods to gather reference material. Humphries noted that they wanted to experience all aspects of South Florida firsthand, including nightclubs and the Everglades.

What This Means

The decision to limit exploration through the main story suggests that Rockstar is focusing on creating a more immersive experience rather than just a vast open world. By not forcing players to visit every location, the developers aim to enhance the authenticity of the narrative and gameplay.

Additionally, the inclusion of over 170 animal species, some with rare and legendary variants, indicates a commitment to detail and realism in the game's environment.
