Community reports suggest that Xbox could have the upper hand on GTA 6 sales due to a PS5-only restriction. According to Polygon.com, while many players have a preferred platform for Grand Theft Auto 6, the region-locking of download codes on PS5 may influence purchasing decisions.
GTA 6 download codes are reportedly region-locked on PS5, meaning players whose accounts do not match the code's region will be unable to redeem it. This restriction could deter some players from choosing the PS5 version, especially since GTA 6 will not be available on physical discs, with all editions containing only a download code.
In contrast, Xbox download codes are said to be redeemable on any account, regardless of region. This flexibility may appeal to players who prefer to avoid potential activation issues associated with region-locked codes on PS5.
Despite initial reports indicating that PS5 pre-orders were outperforming Xbox's by an 8-to-1 ratio, Xbox has claimed that this data reflected internet traffic rather than actual sales figures. They assert that they have seen record numbers in GTA 6 pre-orders, suggesting a competitive stance against PS5.
Retailers have noted a decline in pre-orders for physical versions of GTA 6, as many players prefer digital copies to avoid the complications of region-locked codes. GameSpot employees have reported that consumers are less interested in purchasing physical boxes that contain only a code, leading them to opt for digital pre-orders instead.
