According to reports from Kotaku, physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 in Japan will not include a traditional disc. Instead, they will contain a code in a box that grants access to a digital download of the game. This code is set to expire after 170 days from the game's release on November 19, 2023.
The situation appears to stem from regional regulations. The Japan Payment Services Act mandates that companies selling prepaid goods or services must deposit at least half the value of each item sold with the Japan Legal Affairs Bureau. However, companies can circumvent this law if the prepaid code expires within six months of issuance. The 170-day expiration aligns closely with this requirement.
Power Unlimited columnist Genki first highlighted the potential expiration of these codes, noting that confusion existed over whether this restriction applied to the full game or just downloadable content. Further confirmation suggests that all physical copies sold in Japan will include a single code, regardless of whether they are pre-ordered or purchased at retail.
Notably, there will be no physical version for the $100 Ultimate Edition of GTA 6, which also follows this code-only model. As a result, consumers who purchase physical copies of the game in Japan will find that their copies become worthless on May 8, 2027, when the codes expire.
Kotaku has reached out to Rockstar Games for additional information regarding this unusual situation, which may become more common as the industry shifts towards an all-digital future while still catering to consumers who prefer physical copies.
