Grand Theft Auto players have rallied behind a sick fan named Jerry, who is in urgent need of a lung transplant. The community has successfully raised more than $50,000 to help him live long enough to play GTA 6, which is set to release in November.
Jerry has battled interstitial lung disease since he was 17, and his condition has progressed to the point where he requires a lung transplant for a chance at healing. His parent, Paris Fort, shared his story through a GoFundMe page, stating that Jerry has always pushed through pain to support those he loves.
The initial update video about Jerry's situation amassed millions of views and garnered 1.9 million likes, prompting an outpouring of support from the gaming community. Comments such as "You're gonna get that transplant just in the nick of time, I believe in you" and "WHEN you make it, WE are buying YOU GTA 6" reflect the encouragement and hope shared among fans.
The fundraising goal was initially set at $15,000 to help Jerry and his family through the year, but as of the time of this article's publication, the GoFundMe page had reached $53,151. This additional funding will not only assist with the costs of the delicate lung transplant operation but will also help support Jerry during what could be a lengthy recovery period.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his post-operative recovery timeline, Jerry remains hopeful. He expressed his determination, stating, "They believe I will make it out the other side – I have hope I will – but I'm a very spiritual individual, so even if I don't, where I go will be great."
