ShinyHunters, the hacking group that gained notoriety earlier this year for threatening Rockstar Games over a Grand Theft Auto 6 leak, has now escalated their actions by targeting the FBI. According to reports from Polygon, the group is demanding the removal of a public service announcement issued by the FBI, which labeled them as a threat. They claim they will release sensitive information about current and former FBI employees unless their demands are met.

Previously, ShinyHunters attempted to pressure Rockstar into paying a ransom, leading to the release of private data related to the game development studio. This data breach primarily focused on Rockstar's financials, revealing that GTA Online generates around $1 million a day. However, the leak was largely dismissed by the public as inconsequential. In contrast, the current threat against the FBI is seen as potentially more serious, with experts warning that a release of the information could have national security implications.

Background

The FBI had previously issued a public service announcement about ShinyHunters, accusing them of using harassment tactics and threatening victims. The group responded by attempting to steal sensitive information from the FBI, including personal data of employees and job applicants. This breach reportedly includes home addresses, phone numbers, and medical information for tens of thousands of individuals.

Experts have expressed concern that if ShinyHunters follows through on their threat, the stolen information could be accessed by foreign intelligence agencies, raising alarms about national security.
