Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to unlock at different times worldwide, with 15 distinct regional launch times for PlayStation 5 users. According to reports, the earliest unlock time is at 11 AM UTC on November 18, while the latest is at 6 AM UTC on November 19, creating a 19-hour difference between regions.
The game will be available first in New Zealand, unlocking at midnight NZDT on November 19. In contrast, players in Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua will have to wait until midnight CST on November 20 to access the game.
The unlock times are determined by the region of the PlayStation Store account used to pre-order the game, not the player's physical location. For instance, a player in Canada who pre-orders from the UK store will have the game unlock according to UK timings.
Additionally, there are reports that Xbox users might still utilize the old New Zealand trick to play early, as the console allows users to switch regions and stores through the system menu, making copies not locked to any specific region.
Background
The staggered release is a common practice in the gaming industry, and it appears that not all PlayStation Store pages display the release timestamps for every country. Reports indicate that countries like Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, and Qatar lack this information.
Furthermore, some regions, including The Philippines, Russia, Serbia, and Vietnam, redirect users to other countries' stores, complicating the pre-order process.
What This Means
Players should be aware of their account's region when pre-ordering GTA 6, as this will directly affect when they can start playing. The potential for Xbox users to play early adds an interesting dynamic to the launch, especially for those familiar with region-switching methods.
